Key Factors in Selecting Mobility Scooter Transport Racks

There will be some considerations you will want to take into account before purchasing a scooter carrier or transport rack.

Assessing Transport Rack Weight Capacities

It is essential to verify the weight limit of a mobility scooter transport rack before purchase. Your mobility device or electric scooter should weigh less than the maximum carrying capacity of the rack to ensure safety. Remember to account for the weight of your scooter and any additional cargo carrier if you plan to carry heavy loads.

Matching Carrier Size to Your Vehicle

Find a scooter carrier that aligns with your vehicle’s dimensions. Ensure there is enough space on the back of your vehicle, whether it’s a car, van, or RV, and that the carrier tray doesn’t obstruct the tailgate or trunk access.

Confirming Your Vehicle’s Hauling Capability

Your vehicle’s ability to haul heavy items such as a power wheelchair or power chair without risk is critical for safety reasons. Larger vehicles generally support more hauling weight suitable for wheelchair car racks and mobility carriers.

Compatible Trailer Hitch Classes

Attaching the transport rack to the vehicle will require a trailer hitch. Examine which trailer hitch classes are suitable for your scooter carrier. Hitch receivers on your vehicle, typically Class III or IV, should match the hitch class recommended for the mobility scooter transport rack. Most scooter carriers, but not all, use a 2″ Class iii or Class iv hitch.

Choosing Racks with an Integrated Ramp

Select a transport rack featuring a folding loading ramp for easy loading and unloading of your mobility device. The ramp should be made of durable steel or lightweight aluminum and be able to fold to a secure, upright position during transit.

Opting for Foldable Racks to Save Space

Consider a hitch-mounted carrier that folds against your vehicle when not in use, providing a great solution for tight spaces and making it a great option for everyday use.

How do I choose the right size transport carrier?

By considering these factors and ensuring that your mobility equipment is safely and properly secured, you can confidently transport your mobility aids, whether for everyday use or a long trip.

Are there alternatives for transporting electric scooters?

Besides hitch-mounted carriers, alternatives include:

– Portable scooter lifts, designed for compact storage and easy loading into the back of your vehicle.
– Wheelchair car racks are suitable for manual wheelchairs and foldable mobility scooters.
– In some cases, cargo carriers or custom fabrication made-to-order items could meet specific requirements.

What should be considered with the weight limitations of hitch-mounted scooter carriers?

– Carrying capacity is crucial; most hitch-mounted carriers can handle heavy loads but check the manufacturer’s specified weight capacity.

  1. I have a class B RV and I need to haul a car and 2 mobility scooters. Our scooters are Merits Mobility Pioneer 3 so they don’t come apart and are bigger then most. Help.

    1. Hi Merritt,

I don’t have a solution but maybe an idea – have you contacted your local RV dealership to see what they would suggest or contacted your RV manufacturer? They would know the towing capacity and any safety issues you would need to consider while also taking into consideration towing your car. Maybe a toy trailer would be large enough for your scooters? But again, you want to be sure that your RV could safely handle towing one along with your vehicle. If you come up with a solution please come back and share it with us. Thank you for stopping by.
